Working offline

Open, edit and create files in Code with no connection; your edits wait on the device and merge when you're back.

A train, a flight or a dead spot doesn't stop you working on a file. A document, workbook, deck, diagram or text file you have opened in Code is kept on your device, and you can keep editing it with no connection. Your edits wait on the device and go up by themselves when you're back online.

What is on your device

  • Every file you open in Code. It is kept as it opens, at the version you read.
  • Files and folders you mark Available offline. Choose Available offline from a file's or a folder's menu in Code or Assets. A folder keeps its whole listing and every file under it, and stays up to date while you're online.
  • Pictures and files you open in Assets and the wiki.
  • The file tree, so the Explorer still draws.

A phone keeps up to 1 GB, and an iPad, the Mac, the desktop app and a browser up to 4 GB (a browser never more than it allows the page). When a new file would go over, the files you opened longest ago make room. A file marked Available offline, or one with edits that haven't been sent, is never removed to make room. A marked folder too large to fit keeps what it can and says Some files in this folder didn't fit on this device.

Settings ▸ Offline files shows the space used, everything marked Available offline with Remove, and every edit still waiting to be sent, with Discard.

Editing with no connection

Peractor edits Office files on your device when it can't reach the server, with the same editor and the same commands. The file shows a crossed-out connection mark in its status line in a browser, the desktop app and the Mac. On a phone, a gold strip across the top of the screen says You're offline · edits stay on this device. Press either to read You're offline. Edits stay on this device until you're back online.

A few commands need the server, so they leave the menus while you're offline rather than failing: exporting to PDF, Print layout, Present, History, Versions and Share. Comments stay; they are part of the file.

Older formats — .doc, .xls, .ppt and the OpenDocument ones — are converted by the server. One you have opened online before opens read-only from the copy made then, and becomes editable again when you're back; one you haven't says Opening this file needs a connection. A file that isn't on your device says You're offline. This file isn't on this device., and opens by itself once you're back.

New file works offline in Code and the wiki: blank, or from one of the project's templates in .peractor/templates/office/ that your device has kept. The device keeps each template whenever New file lists it online, so offline it lists the ones it has. The new file waits in Changes like any other edit.

Each edit is written to the device as you make it, so quitting the app or a crash loses nothing. Code's Changes lists each edit still on the device as Waiting to send.

Coming back

When the connection returns, or the next time the app starts, each waiting edit is sent as a commit, Edit plan.docx, made by you. If the file is open live, everyone in it sees your edit arrive. If somebody changed the file while you were away, the two are merged — a document paragraph by paragraph, a workbook cell by cell, a diagram shape by shape, and a deck by replaying the slide changes you made. Nothing is overwritten quietly: where the two can't be merged, Code asks which version to keep, and your edit stays on the device until you choose.

If you can no longer edit the file by the time you're back, the edit isn't written. It stays on the device marked You can no longer edit this file., so you can save a copy of it or discard it. A branch that only takes changes through a pull request offers Commit to a new branch, as it does online.

Waiting edits in your other projects are sent too, without opening them. One that goes to that project's Changes instead, or needs a choice there, waits until you open the project.

Signing out removes that account's files from the device. While edits are still waiting to be sent, it asks first, also when the assistant signs you out: Edits not sent yet.

Opening Peractor offline

The phones, the Mac and the desktop app open with no connection. In a browser, the dashboard opens offline once you have used it there while signed in; a browser that has never signed in says You're offline. Peractor opens when you're back online.
